What Is Kapton® Film?

As a high-performance polyimide film developed by DuPont, Kapton® film is widely recognized as a benchmark material for extreme-temperature electrical insulation. It delivers excellent mechanical, electrical, and chemical stability across a service temperature range from -269°C to +400°C — making it suitable for demanding environments where most polyimide films cannot perform reliably.

Qnity (formerly DuPont) Kapton® is widely used in motors, generators, transformers, aerospace, and flexible electronics. As an authorized supplier, Sui On Insulating provides a full range of Kapton® polyimide film grades in standard and customized specifications, supported by ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and IATF 16949 certified quality systems.

Applications of Kapton® Film

New Energy Vehicle Motors

Kapton® MT+ and EWS polyimide film grades deliver the high thermal conductivity and corona resistance required by EV drive motors operating at 400V–800V, making Sui On Insulating a preferred source of kapton film for new energy vehicle manufacturers.

Industrial Motors & Generators

Kapton® CR and FCR film rolls are specifically engineered to defend rotating machine insulation systems against partial discharge — the primary cause of premature failure in high-voltage industrial motors and generators. As experienced Kapton® film suppliers, Sui On Insulating provides these grades with full technical support.

Transformers

DuPont Kapton® polyimide film in HN and CR grades serves as interlayer insulation and winding barriers in dry-type and power transformers, offering stable dielectric performance across extreme temperature cycling.

Flexible Electronics & PCB

Ultra-thin Kapton® film is the industry standard substrate for flexible printed circuits (FPC), flex-rigid PCBs, and electronic component insulation, valued for its dimensional stability and resistance to thermal expansion.

Aerospace & Defense

Kapton® materialhas been trusted by aerospace and defense applications since its development — offering cryogenic performance down to -269°C and thermal resistance up to +400°C in a lightweight, flexible film format.

1. What is Kapton® film used for?

Kapton® film is used as electrical insulation in motors, generators, transformers, flexible circuits, aerospace components, and automotive systems — wherever extreme temperature stability, chemical resistance, and reliable dielectric performance are required. Sui On Insulating supplies DuPont Kapton® polyimide film for all these applications.

2. What is the difference between Kapton® HN and Kapton® CR?

Kapton® HN film is a general-purpose polyimide film offering excellent electrical insulation and chemical resistance for standard industrial and automotive applications. Kapton® CR is a specialist grade specifically engineered to resist partial discharge in high-voltage rotating machines — the preferred choice for generators, traction motors, and transformers where ionization-induced insulation breakdown is a risk.

3. What temperature can Kapton® polyimide film withstand?

DuPont Kapton® polyimide film maintains stable performance from -269°C to +400°C continuously, with a standard supply temperature resistance rating of 200–240°C. This makes Kapton® material the highest-rated flexible insulation film available for demanding industrial and aerospace applications.

4. Are Kapton® film rolls available in custom widths?

Yes. Sui On Insulating supplies Kapton® film rolls in standard 1,000mm width and offers precision custom slitting to meet your exact width requirements. Custom cutting, laminating, and composite processing are also available.

5. Is Sui On Insulating an authorized Kapton® film supplier?

Yes. Sui On Insulating is an experienced Kapton® film supplier offering the full range of DuPont Kapton® polyimide film grades with UL certification (E39505), ISO 9001 / 14001 / IATF 16949 quality assurance, and RoHS & REACH environmental compliance. We serve customers across Asia, Europe, North America, and global markets.

6. How does Kapton® compare to other polyimide film manufacturers’ products?

As the original developer of polyimide film, DuPont’s Kapton® sets the performance benchmark that other polyimide film manufacturers are measured against — particularly in corona resistance (CR/FCR grades), thermal conductivity (MT+/EWS grades), and long-term reliability data accumulated over 40+ years of global deployment. Sui On Insulating supplies only genuine DuPont Kapton® film with full certification documentation.
